In accordance with Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) regulations and the City of LaFayette’s commitment to public health and transparency, the Water and Sewer Department is reporting a major sewer spill that occurred on May 2–3, 2025.
The spill resulted from debris in the sewer main, which caused a blockage in the effluent line connected to a manhole at the above-listed location. This obstruction led to the discharge of approximately 30,000 gallons of untreated wastewater into Town Creek, a state waterway.
Corrective Actions Taken:
Sewer Department personnel responded promptly to the incident. The team performed multiple cleanings on the discharge side of the affected manhole to remove debris and restore normal flow through the system. Continuous monitoring has been implemented to ensure proper operation and to prevent recurrence.
Public Advisory:
As required, this notification is being issued to inform the public of the incident. Residents are advised to avoid contact with the affected portion of Town Creek until water quality has returned to normal.
