Walker County, GA – All Walker County Government offices, including the landfill, will be closed on Thursday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The day serves as a time to reflect on freedom, equality, and the ongoing pursuit of justice for all Americans.
Normal operations will resume on Friday, June 20th.
