Monday Is the Final Day to Qualify for Georgia Senate District 53 Race

Today, Monday, is the final day for candidates to qualify for the Georgia Senate District 53 seat, which is being vacated by Colton Moore of Dade County. Moore is running for the U.S. House seat currently held by Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Candidate qualifying opened Thursday and will close today at 1:00 p.m. The qualifying fee for the state senate race is $400.

As of Monday morning, four candidates have officially signed up to run for the District 53 seat.

Those qualifying on the Republican side include:

  • Lanny Thomas, Mayor of Trion

  • Denise Burns, a homemaker and home educator from Chickamauga

  • Blake Elsberry, former sole commissioner of Chattooga County

No additional candidates had qualified by press time, but officials note that filings will be accepted until the 1 p.m. deadline today.

Georgia Senate District 53 includes Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Chattooga Counties.
