Visitors are invited to celebrate Independence Day weekend by exploring the history and stories of sacrifice at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.
The park will offer special programs, living history demonstrations, and free tours July 3 through July 5, highlighting the events and individuals connected to the 1863 Battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga.
Officials say the battles helped shape the future of the nation nearly a century after the Declaration of Independence was signed in July 1776. Guests will have the opportunity to learn about the heroism and sacrifices of those who fought on the historic grounds during the Civil War.
Entrance fees to Point Park on Lookout Mountain will be waived throughout the holiday weekend. A variety of ranger-led programs and demonstrations will be available at both Chickamauga Battlefield and Point Park.
On July 3, Chickamauga Battlefield will host a 10 a.m. car caravan driving tour and a 2 p.m. program on the process of emancipation during the Civil War. At Point Park, ranger talks on the Battles for Chattanooga will be held at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 4 p.m.
On July 4 and 5, Chickamauga Battlefield will offer a 10 a.m. driving tour, along with artillery firing demonstrations at 11 a.m., 2 p.m., and 3 p.m. Point Park will feature ranger talks at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., as well as infantry firing demonstrations at noon, 2 p.m., and 3 p.m.
Park officials encourage visitors to take advantage of the free programs and experience the history preserved at one of the nation’s most significant Civil War sites during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
