Several closures to tell you about. Georgia Northwestern Technical College has cancelled all classes and activities for today. Walker County Schools are closed today. Chickamauga City Schools are also closed. Chattooga County Schools are doing remote learning. Trion City Schools are open. School officials say that any absence today will be excused due to the extreme cold. Catoosa County Schools are closed while Dade County is on a two-hour delay.

The Walker County Board of Education will still hold the regular session today. The meeting is set for 6pm at the Central Office in LaFayette.

Governor Brian Kemp has declared a state wide, state of emergency. The state of emergency is in effect until next Tuesday. The cold weather is here for at least a while longer. We’ll see temperatures in the 20’s to near 30. We could see some snow flurries today but no accumulation is expected. Kendrick’s Switch Road will be closed today and tomorrow to thru traffic due to a culvert replacement project. The road will reopen by the end of the day Wednesday. Osburn Road will be closed from Hwy 27 to Lee Gordon Mill Road beginning tomorrow for several weeks. This is part of the sewer redirection project by the Walker County Water & Sewerage Authority.

The Walker County Historic Preservation Commission meets today at 6:00 p.m. at the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library in LaFayette. The public is invited to attend.

An inmate at the Catoosa County Jail has died after being assaulted by another inmate last month. The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office says they found Robert White with serious wounds at around 1 a.m. back on December 5. Deputies believe Erwin Vanegas attacked White while he was lying down after White “upset” Vanegas earlier that evening. White was taken to the hospital and listed in serious condition, but has since passed away. The investigation is on-going according to the sheriff’s department.

The latest restaurant health inspection report shows a 100 for the Papa John’s and Los Guerrero’s in LaFayette. 99 for Geo’s Smokehouse in LaFayette. Southern Bliss Bakery and Sandwich Shop scored a 95. The Huddle House in Chickamauga scored a 92. Old South Restaurant in Rossville received an 87.
