Voters in Georgia will head to the polls Tuesday, June 17th, for a special primary election to select Public Service Commissioners for Districts 2 and 3. While the seats represent specific districts, all Georgia voters can vote in both races. Early voting starts May 27th and runs through June 13th at the Walker County Courthouse, with additional hours at the Chickamauga Civic Center. District 2 candidates include Tim Echols, Lee Muns, and Alicia M. Johnson. For District 3, voters will choose between Fitz Johnson, Daniel Blackman, Peter Hubbard, Robert Jones, and Keisha Sean Waites. The deadline to register is May 19th. Remember, Election Day is June 17th from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In a special event aimed at finding forever homes for pets, the Walker County Animal Shelter is participating in the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” campaign. It’s happening now through May 15th. Nearly 400 shelters nationwide are joining in, and for the first time, Walker County’s Animal Shelter is offering reduced adoption fees. Cats and dogs over four months old can be adopted for free, while kittens and puppies are just $25. The shelter is located on North Marble Top Road, near Chickamauga, and is open Monday through Friday.

A 52-year-old Catoosa County man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, followed by 30 years of sex offender probation. A jury last month convicted James Myers. Judge Brian House handed down the sentencing. Myers thought he was making arrangements to have sex with an 11-year-old girl named Emily from Ringgold. Instead, he was communicating with a group of private citizens from Texas. The group is called Predator Poachers. Myers arranged to meet the girl at his home when a member of the group confronted him and recorded a conversation where Myers admitted to viewing and sending child pornography using the Telegram app. We’ve got more details on this story on our website at DiscoverWalker.com.
