Today marks the start of qualifying for the City of LaFayette’s upcoming municipal election, set for Tuesday, November 4th. Starting today, and running through Wednesday, August 20th, candidates can qualify at LaFayette City Hall between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day. Several key positions are up for election, including Mayor, Ward 1 and Ward 2 Council seats, and Municipal Judge. Qualifying fees are $126 for mayoral candidates and $108 for both council seats and the judge position. Anyone interested in running is encouraged to contact City Hall for more details. Again, qualifying runs through this Wednesday, and the municipal election will be held Tuesday, November 4th.
Walker County Government is now hiring for several positions across multiple departments. Current openings include General Laborer, Firefighter, Equipment Operator at the landfill, Fleet Technician, Transit Driver, and a First Impressions Receptionist in the Tax Commissioner’s Office. Part-time and volunteer firefighter roles are also available, and the Sheriff’s Office is accepting ongoing applications for Detention Officers with a starting pay of $20.28 an hour. The Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help locating two suspects in a recent theft. On July 20th, around 1 PM, Randall Wade Brogdon and Valerie Hope Vaughn were seen stealing a trailer loaded with personal items, including a blue Honda motorcycle, from a storage lot on Mack Smith Road. They were last seen in a white Nissan Altima near Browns Ferry Road in Chattanooga. Warrants have been issued for their arrest. If you’re traveling to Dalton today, heads up—crews will be working on Underwood Street near Rushmore Drive. The westbound lane will be closed all day as they replace a drainage culvert. Work is expected to wrap up today, but may extend into tomorrow. Traffic will be directed through the area, but drivers are encouraged to take an alternate route.
The Walker County Historic Preservation Commission will hold a public meeting this Monday, August 18th, at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place at the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library on South Duke Street.
