The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is asking for your help tonight following a troubling case of vandalism near one of its most historic sites. Park officials say that around 7:30 on the evening of Monday, September 8th, an unidentified man was seen damaging property near the Cravens House on Lookout Mountain. The suspect was reportedly part of a group of young men who arrived at the scene in a silver SUV — possibly a Toyota RAV4. Authorities are now seeking information from the public that could help identify those involved. If you saw anything suspicious in the area or have any information about this incident, you’re urged to contact Law Enforcement Park Ranger J. Young at 423-298-7437. That number again — 423-298-7437.
Chickamauga residents — now’s your chance to have a say on your property taxes. The Chickamauga City Council and the City Schools Board of Education are holding a series of public hearings this month to discuss the proposed school millage rate and the city’s general fund millage. The City Council will hold two hearings at the Chickamauga Civic Center: Thursday, September 12th at 6 PM and Thursday, September 19th at 6 PM. Meanwhile, the Board of Education will host its own hearings on the proposed school millage: Wednesday, September 11th at 11:30 AM and again at 6 PM and also Wednesday, September 18th at 4:30 PM. A called BOE meeting will follow at 5:15 PM that same day to finalize their recommendation. After these sessions, City Council will vote on the Board’s recommendation and set the final millage rates for both the city and schools. For more information, contact City Hall.
If you travel through downtown LaFayette, you’ll want to mark your calendar — a key intersection is set to close for several days next week. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, the intersection of South Main Street — that’s Business Highway 27 — and West Main Street, or Highway 193, will be shut down to all traffic from September 15th through the 19th. That’s the corner near the old Family Dollar. This is a state-managed project, not a city initiative, but the City of LaFayette is helping spread the word so residents and commuters can prepare. GDOT will have official detour routes clearly posted on-site, and drivers are encouraged to follow all signage and give themselves a little extra time to get around.
Walker Rocks Park is entering a new phase of accessibility and recreation as primary construction on its playground expansion wrapped up late last week. New additions include inclusive features such as a zip track, carousel, sensory stations, and the sensory summit roundabout, designed to support children of all abilities — including those with limited mobility. A communication board will be installed later this month, with a solar-powered charging station to follow later this year. Construction on four new pickleball courts is also scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
