Several students at a Walker County school were hospitalized Wednesday after ingesting a substance later identified as Kratom. Authorities say multiple eighth-grade students at Saddle Ridge Elementary and Middle School in Rock Spring became ill after consuming what’s being described as a “gummy”-type substance containing Kratom.  Emergency crews responded to the school yesterday afternoon after staff noticed several students showing signs of sickness. All affected students received medical attention, and several were taken to a local hospital. Officials say they remain in stable condition.  Kratom comes from the leaves of a tropical tree and can act as a stimulant at low doses and as a sedative at higher doses. The Food and Drug Administration has not approved Kratom for any medical use and warns it can be dangerous.  Authorities say the investigation is continuing.

Weather delays have once again thrown off the tournament schedule, but the Ramblers are finally set to take the field this morning at 11 o’clock against North Hall in their Elite Eight matchup.  The game was originally set for Wednesday but has been moved twice due to rain before finally being rescheduled for today.  If the Ramblers pull off a win, they’ll advance to play the winner of Pickens and Cherokee Bluff tomorrow afternoon at 5.  However, a loss would send them into the losers’ bracket, where they’d need to win three straight games on Friday to stay alive in the tournament.
