The LaFayette City Council meets today, for its final regular meeting of the year. A zoning hearing begins at 6:15, followed by the full council session at 6:30 at City Hall. Council members will recognize Christmas Parade winners, city service award recipients, and honor the LaFayette High School volleyball team for winning a district championship. The agenda includes upcoming city events and several agreements and project proposals—among them an agreement with Pilgrim’s Pride, engineering work for a water line and Circle Drive sewer improvements, and a sludge-disposal proposal from Global Environmental. Council members will also consider new flooring for the Recreation Center, a CleanSpark interruptible power agreement, updates to film permitting, and Honeybee Festival copyright matters.

The Walker County Animal Shelter reports another busy week, taking in 7 cats and 13 dogs. Despite being at full capacity, the shelter saw strong adoption numbers — 11 cats and 9 dogs found new homes, 2 dogs were reclaimed by their owners, and another dog was transferred to rescue. The “Empty the Shelter” adoption event continues through the 15th, offering reduced fees for anyone looking to add a furry friend to the family. The shelter is also putting out an urgent call for fosters, especially for mama dogs with puppies. Several litters arrived this week, and foster homes are critically needed. Those interested can fill out a foster application on the shelter’s website.
Congratulations in order for two LaFayette High School Softball players. Tamra Yancy was named 1st Team All-State. Marlie Day was an All-State Honorable Mention.
