New details are out about last week’s firetruck crash in Walker County. A Georgia State Patrol report, obtained by WTVC-TV, says the driver, John Pendergrass, was heading south on Old LaFayette Road when he tried to stop at a stop sign—but the brakes failed. The truck lost control crossing railroad tracks, went off an embankment, and flipped onto its side before catching fire. No one was hurt. AT&T has boosted its 5G coverage in Walker County with a new cell site in LaFayette. The upgrade improves service along Highway 136 and near the Walker County Fire Station, benefiting both residents and emergency responders. Local leaders say it’s a key step in closing the digital divide, with over 17 percent of the county relying solely on wireless internet. The site also enhances FirstNet — the nationwide network for first responders — improving emergency communication and response.
Two felony arrests in Walker County Monday.  22-year-old Devin Natham Austin was booked violation of probation.  65-year-old Douglas Edward Salvador faces charges of obstructing law enforcement officers, a possession charge and felony fleeing.  The entire arrest report is updated daily on our website at DiscoverWalker.com.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety’s Motor Carrier Compliance Division is now known as Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, or CVE. Officials say the change better reflects the division’s role in monitoring and enforcing commercial vehicle safety. While the name is new, the mission stays the same—keeping Georgia’s roads safe through enforcement and outreach. New signage and branding will roll out as the transition begins.  The name change went into effect yesterday.
Georgia Northwestern Technical College is hosting a free, all-day Open House on Thursday, July 10—and the Walker County Campus in Rock Spring is one of six locations welcoming visitors. From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., guests can tour the campus, meet faculty, explore programs, and even apply for free. GNTC officials say it’s a great chance to learn about career training and student support services. Free giveaways will be available while supplies last.
