Walker County deputies are searching for a suspect after an armed robbery at Steve’s Quick Stop on Broomtown Road Tuesday night. A Black male, about 6 feet tall and 35 to 40 years old, robbed the store clerk at gunpoint around 9:05 p.m. and fled with cash. He was last seen running north toward downtown LaFayette.  Surveillance images have been released. Anyone with information should contact Detective Walter Hensley at 706-670-1938 or submit a tip at walkerso.com. Authorities warn the suspect may be armed and dangerous.
The Walker County Board of Commissioners meets today.  Among the items on the agenda, a public hearing on the 2026 Fiscal Year Budget.  Commissioners will also discuss a purchase order for more than 1-point-4 million dollars for the new ladder truck for Walker County Fire Rescue.  The meeting begins at 6pm at the Courthouse Annex IV at 201 South Duke Street in LaFayette.  The meeting will be streamed live on the county’s Facebook page.
Georgia is teaming up with Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina for “Operation Southern Slow Down,” a regional speed enforcement effort running July 14th through the 20th. Law enforcement will be out in force to reduce crashes during one of the year’s most dangerous travel weeks.  Officials urge drivers to slow down, stay alert, and buckle up.
Walker County voters will get one more chance to cast ballots in the Democratic Special Primary for Georgia’s Public Service Commission. A runoff is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15.  Due to low turnout in June—under 1%—state law allows just one polling place: the LaFayette Senior Center at 636 South Main Street.  Early voting is already underway at the Elections Office inside the courthouse and runs through Friday, July 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Public Service Commission helps regulate Georgia’s utilities, including electricity and natural gas.
The Walker County Health Department is offering free health screenings for children today. Services include hearing, vision, dental, and nutrition checks—plus 3300 Forms needed for school enrollment.  Screenings are for kids ages 3 to 18 and will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. at The Walker County Health Department at 603 East Villanow Street in LaFayette. No appointment needed—just drop by!
