Today is Election Day in Walker County, where voters have one last chance to cast ballots in the Democratic runoff for Georgia’s Public Service Commission. Due to low turnout in June—less than one percent—only one polling location is open: the LaFayette Senior Center at 636 South Main Street. The Public Service Commission regulates electricity and gas rates statewide. Polls are open until this evening.
The 9th Annual Operation Southern Slow Down is underway. The weeklong speed enforcement campaign kicked off yesterday and runs through Friday. Law enforcement from Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee are teaming up to crack down on speeding. State and local officers will be out in force all week, so drivers are urged to slow down and obey posted limits.
The Walker County Board of Education has two meetings scheduled. A called session focused on personnel matters will be held today at 5 p.m. at the Advancing Education Center in Chickamauga. The board’s regular monthly meeting is set for Monday, July 21 at 6 p.m. at the Central Office in LaFayette.
High School Football season is just around the corner. The LaFayette Ramblers are in Region 7-3-A. LaFayette is joined by Ridgeland, Heritage, Northwest Whitfield, Gilmer, Calhoun and Adairsville.
