         The Walker County Board of Commissioners wrapped up its final regular meeting of 2025 Thursday night, covering everything from insurance savings to local concerns.  Commission Chair Angie Teems announced the county will save more than $91,000 next year thanks to reduced workers’ compensation and liability insurance rates. She also highlighted winter-weather preparations and ongoing updates in the Battle Bluff subdivision.  Two residents were honored: Melba Powell, retiring after 60 years on the Board of Assessors… and 18-year-old Joel Westbrook, recognized for competing in the Para Karate World Championships in Egypt.  Commissioners reported progress on the county audit, along with results from Tire Amnesty Day—3,355 tires collected. The Litter Task Force continues expanding cleanup and education efforts.  Public comment centered on zoning requests and increasing frustration over a pallet yard on Highway 341. Residents also raised concerns about payments to an out-of-state IT vendor, questioning its legitimacy and the lack of written agreements.  The board approved contracts for mowing services, trail resurfacing, a digital message board, and a traffic light replacement. Work on several 2026 action items will continue.  The commission reconvenes in January.
          The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office says they have a man is in custody in connection to a case involving over 350 inappropriate child images.  Sheriff Darren Pierce said police have arrested Trevor Lee Teasley.  He is being held in the Whitfield County Detention Center without bond.  Pierce is awaiting his first court appearance.
           AAA says this year’s year-end holiday travel will set a new record, with 122 million Americans expected to travel between December 20 and January 1. That includes 3.8 million Georgians, the most ever.  Nearly 90% of travelers will hit the road, helped by gas prices now averaging under three dollars nationwide. AAA reminds drivers to prepare their vehicles, avoid impaired driving, and watch for roadside crews.  Air travel is also breaking records, topping 8 million passengers for the first time, with domestic flights averaging about $900.  AAA urges travelers to plan ahead, expect crowded airports and highways, and consider travel insurance with winter weather in the mix.
          The Bank of LaFayette has teamed up with LaFayette First Baptist Church for a month-long December food drive to help local families in need this holiday season.  Residents can drop off non-perishable food items at any Bank of LaFayette branch during regular business hours.  All donations will go to the Care Mission, which provides essential food assistance to individuals and families throughout the community.
