The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam.
Officials say callers are pretending to be deputies.
Victims are told they missed jury duty or a court date.
The callers then demand personal information.
Sometimes, they ask for money.
The Sheriff’s Office says it does not operate this way.
Residents should never give out personal or financial information over the phone.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up.
Then contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 706-670-1931.
Officials say staying alert can help prevent more victims.
A proposed gondola project at Rock City is moving forward, but not without concerns.
The project was discussed this week by the Lookout Mountain Planning Commission.
The gondola would carry visitors from a parking area at the bottom of the mountain to the top.
The goal is to reduce traffic and congestion on Lookout Mountain.
The project has already been approved by the Walker County Board of Commissioners.
However, some residents are concerned.
They worry about safety.
They also worry about how the gondola will affect the mountain’s natural beauty.
The planning commission is expected to make a recommendation at a future meeting.
The final decision will be made by the Lookout Mountain City Council.
A bill that would ban cellphones during the school day in Georgia high schools is one step closer to becoming law.
The Georgia House of Representatives passed House Bill 1009 by a vote of 145 to 20.
The bill would ban student access to phones from bell to bell.
Schools would also be required to store the devices.
This could include lockers, locked pouches, or other secure locations.
Lawmakers previously banned phones in elementary and middle schools.
Governor Brian Kemp signed that law in 2025.
Supporters say the goal is to reduce distractions.
The new bill now heads to the Georgia State Senate.
If approved, the ban would apply to schools across Georgia.
