Qualifying is now underway in Walker County for several local offices. According to the Walker County Elections Office, candidates began filing this week for seats on the Walker County Commission in Districts One and Two, and for Board of Education Posts Two and Three. Democrats are qualifying at the Elections Office on South Main Street in LaFayette. Republicans are qualifying at party headquarters on Highway 27 in Rock Spring. Qualifying runs through Friday, with hours from nine to five, and until noon on Friday. The City of Rossville is also qualifying candidates for a City Council seat to fill an unexpired term.
State Representative Mike Cameron has announced his campaign for re-election in Georgia House District One, serving Walker and Dade counties. Cameron is seeking another two-year term, highlighting what he calls nine billion dollars in tax relief, including a temporary gas tax suspension, income and property tax rebates, and a reduction in the state income tax to 4.99 percent. He also points to local projects, including highway safety improvements, new playgrounds in Rossville, and recreation upgrades in LaFayette. Early voting begins April 27th. Election Day is May 19th.
The Chattanooga Area Food Bank is bringing grocery assistance to LaFayette later this month. A free food distribution will be held March 19th at LaFayette First Baptist Church for anyone in need. Organizers say you do not have to be a Georgia resident to receive help. The event is part of an effort to expand food access across northwest Georgia. The LaFayette Police Department has released its activity totals for the first two months of 2026. During January and February, officers responded to 34 traffic accidents and made 11 DUI arrests. The department also reported 13 felony arrests during that time. In addition to enforcement efforts, personnel completed a combined 522 hours of training.
