The City of LaFayette says it is monitoring so-called “forever chemicals” in its drinking water and preparing for upcoming federal standards.  City Manager David Hamilton says the safety of the city’s drinking water remains a top priority, following national reporting on PFAS testing data.  According to data submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency and compiled by USA Today, LaFayette’s water system recorded PFAS levels about seven times higher than limits set under new EPA standards.  Hamilton notes those regulations were approved in 2024 but will not take effect until 2029, giving water systems several years to meet the requirements.  He says LaFayette is currently in compliance with existing federal and state regulations and has already been evaluating advanced treatment options to address the future standards.  Residents can review the city’s annual water quality report online.

The Walker County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new phone scam making the rounds. Officials say several people have reported calls from someone claiming to be an employee or officer with the sheriff’s office. The caller tells victims they missed jury duty and now have a warrant for their arrest. In some cases, the scammer even makes it appear the call is coming from the sheriff’s office main phone line. Authorities stress this is a scam and say their office does not handle matters this way. Residents are urged not to share personal information or send money to anyone they don’t know. If you have questions or receive a call like this, contact the Walker County Sheriff’s Office at 706-670-1931.

Walker County leaders are asking for the public’s help in planning for the future.  Every five years, Walker County works with the cities of Chickamauga, LaFayette, Lookout Mountain, and Rossville to update the county’s Comprehensive Plan.  Officials say community feedback has helped guide projects like park improvements, new housing developments, and expanded gig-speed internet access.  Residents are encouraged to share their input by completing the Walker County Comprehensive Plan survey online.  You can find the survey now at nwgrc.gov slash walker survey.
