Residents and emergency responders in Walker County can expect stronger wireless connectivity following AT&T’s installation of a new 5G cell site in LaFayette. The upgrade improves coverage along Highway 136 and enhances signal strength near the Walker County Fire Station.
Local officials say the investment is a welcome step in closing the digital divide across the region. According to a recently adopted Community Connectivity Plan, more than 17 percent of Walker County residents rely solely on wireless service to access the internet.
“AT&T’s investment aligns strategically with our efforts to address the digital divide in our community,” said Angie Teems, Chairwoman of the Walker County Board of Commissioners. “Enhancements to wireless coverage will keep that segment of our population connected as more services move online.”
Public safety agencies are also expected to benefit from the improved infrastructure. The site includes support for FirstNet®, the nation’s dedicated wireless network for first responders. The expansion brings Band 14 spectrum to the area, which prioritizes emergency communications and allows faster, more reliable response capabilities.
“The addition of a new cell tower in a rural part of our county has the potential to significantly enhance emergency services,” said Curtis Creekmur, Director of Walker County Emergency Management. “Reliable cellular communication is critical for many essential functions during an emergency, including public alerts, GPS location services, and emergency calls.”
AT&T says the LaFayette cell site is part of the company’s broader effort to improve wireless coverage across Georgia. From 2020 to 2024, AT&T invested over $16.9 billion in its wireless and wireline networks across the state.
“With enhanced wireless coverage, our customers will be able to experience better network connectivity that will help with virtual learning, responding to emergencies and connecting with one another,” said Brian Barfield, Regional Director of External Affairs for AT&T Georgia.
AT&T’s 5G network currently reaches more than 310 million people in over 26,100 communities across the country.
