LaFayette’s own Channing Wilson stole the spotlight Sunday night on CBS-TV’s The Road, earning the highest audience score of the evening during the show’s latest round of competition.
Performing before a live crowd in Dallas, Wilson closed out the episode with a high-energy cover of Waylon Jennings’ “Honky Tonk Heroes,” followed by his original song, “Drink That Strong.” His performance brought the audience to its feet and drew high praise from the show’s celebrity coaches.
“It’s pretty cool when your original kills your cover,” said Keith Urban, while Blake Shelton told Wilson he “loved” the original song.
Viewers agreed. Wilson’s combined scores from both songs placed him at the top of the six artists who performed on Night One of the Dallas shows — securing his place in the next round of competition.
The episode also saw tension for two other contestants. Jenny and Olivia landed in the bottom two after audience voting. Both reflected on their performances before Urban and Shelton made the difficult choice to send Olivia home.
The Road continues next week with the remaining contestants returning for another round of performances — and another chance to prove they’re ready to take the next big step in country music.
