The Walker County Board of Commissioners and the City of Chickamauga have officially approved a Joint Resolution to honor longtime community leader John Culpepper by naming the Chickamauga Battlefield Connector trail after him.

Culpepper first introduced the vision for the trail back in 2013 while serving as Chickamauga’s City Manager. His early efforts helped lay the foundation for what has now become a key connection between the city and one of the region’s most historic landmarks.

The 2.2-mile trail links downtown Chickamauga directly to the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Military Park, offering residents and visitors a scenic and meaningful route to explore the area’s rich history.

Beyond the trail project, Culpepper has been widely recognized for his dedication to preserving local heritage. He played a major role in documenting and promoting Civil War history, as well as highlighting African American and Native American stories throughout the region.

Local leaders say naming the trail in his honor is a fitting tribute to his vision, leadership, and lasting impact on the community.

While the trail is already open to the public, a formal grand opening celebration is expected to take place later this spring.
