LaFayette, GA-Tonight, a new council member will be sworn in to fill the Ward 1 seat. Tom Langford was elected in the March 18 special election to serve the remainder of the late Mr. Beacher Garmany’s term. Mr. Langford grew up in LaFayette along Main Street, in the very same ward he now represents.

For Mr. Langford, running for City Council is about giving back to the city that helped shape him. He has fond memories of riding bikes in Dogwood Circle and playing football at the old high school stadium at Ross Abney Field. Over the past 28 years, he’s taught government—and more—at LaFayette High School, preparing young minds for civic engagement.

“In the back of my mind, I’ve always thought I’d like to serve my community in this way. Having taught government for so long, I have a very close understanding of what the position entails. I love the way we’re working to connect downtown to West LaFayette to make the city more walkable. I think about places like Blue Ridge where people stroll around town on a Friday night—we have so much to offer here. People love going off the beaten path; let’s help them discover our downtown.”

Mr. Langford encourages residents to reach out directly with concerns, questions, or ideas.
“I’m here to listen and understand. If I believe it’s the right thing to do—something that’s going to make us better—I’m going to support it.”
