Residents across northwest Georgia and surrounding areas should prepare for bitterly cold conditions early Monday, as gusty winds and falling temperatures combine to produce dangerous wind chills.
According to National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect from 1 a.m. until 10 a.m. Monday.
Forecasters say wind chill values are expected to range between 10 and 15 degrees across most areas, with even colder conditions in the mountains where wind chills could drop into the single digits.
The combination of cold air and strong winds can make it feel significantly colder than the actual temperature and may pose a risk for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
Officials recommend dressing in layers, wearing hats and gloves, and limiting time outside during the early morning hours. Residents are also encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, ensure pets have adequate shelter, and take precautions to protect exposed pipes from freezing.
Temperatures are expected to gradually improve later in the day as winds decrease and sunshine returns.
