ELECTION RESULTS: YES to SPLOST, Dems takes Public Service Commission

Georgia Democrats celebrated a major victory Tuesday night as Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard were elected to the state’s Public Service Commission — marking the first time since 2006 that Democrats have won a nonfederal statewide office.

Meanwhile, Walker County voters overwhelmingly approved a one-cent sales tax proposal aimed at funding fire stations, road improvements, and other county projects over the next six years. The measure passed with 70 percent support.

According to the county’s website, the new tax is expected to generate about $69 million and will take effect in October 2026.

In local races, LaFayette City Council Ward 1 incumbent Tom Langford won re-election with 77 percent of the vote, defeating challenger Glenn Gunnells.

For the Chickamauga City School Board, incumbents Daniel “Corky” Jewel, Janet Landers, and Cindy Solomon Roberts all retained their seats.

In Chickamauga, Brad Siegfried was re-elected to the School Board, while Evitte Parrish, David Jones, and Rhonda Jacks all secured re-election to the City Council.

Voter turnout in Walker County was 13.5%.  Less than 6-thousand of the nearly 44-thousand registered voters in the county.
