Environmental Hazards Found at Walker County Courthouse, Officials Say

An account manager for Gordian told Walker County Commissioners on Thursday that the county courthouse contains multiple environmental hazards, following a recent walkthrough and structural review of the building.

Kayla Johnson with Gordian said the assessment revealed the presence of mold, asbestos and lead-based paint throughout the courthouse.

“We did notice that there is mold, asbestos and lead-based paint through the courthouse,” Johnson told commissioners during the meeting.

Johnson also pointed to issues with the courthouse roof, saying water intrusion has led to leaks inside the building, potentially contributing to the environmental concerns.

“The courthouse has got to have some attention,” Johnson said.

County officials did not announce any immediate plans for remediation during the meeting, but the findings are expected to factor into future discussions about repairs, renovations or possible long-term solutions for the aging facility.
