The Georgia Department of Transportation has asked Walker County to lower the speed limit on a section of Highway 193.  GDOT is asking for the speed to be lowered from 55 miles per hour to 50.  The stretch of Highway 193 in question runs from mile marker 12 to marker 13.61 in the High Point community.  The Walker County Board of Commissioners will consider the request at it’s next meeting on December 19th.
Here’s a reminder to be careful with your space heaters this time of year.  Don’t place your space heater near anything flammable and make sure you have a working smoke detector.  If you don’t have a smoke detector, contact Walker Fire and Rescue.  They can schedule a time for a firefighter to come out and install a smoke alarm for free.  Walker Fire and Rescue have installed more than 11-hundered smoke detectors since the start of 2020.
The Walker County Board of Education is set to meet on Monday.  The meeting begins at 6pm at Central Office.
 Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp told lawmakers yesterday that he will emphasize relief efforts for Hurricane Helene and attempts to limit lawsuit verdicts in the state legislative session that begins Jan. 13.  The second-term Governor provided no details of his plan in a speech to members of the General Assembly gathered at the University of Georgia   Kemp did say he would propose both legal changes and new spending to address Helene, which cut through the state in September, killing 34 people and causing billions in damage.  The governor also reiterated his pledge to limit lawsuit verdicts after delaying action for a year, saying solutions needed more study. Kemp argues such verdicts are driving up costs and hampering business.  Most Republicans say they’re ready to support the proposal but want to hear the Governor’s plan.
There were six felony arrests in Walker County on Monday.  31-year-old Shannon Dewayne Holcomb has been charged with possession of meth and driving under the influence.  Douglas Cody Gass was booked on 2 misdemeanor charges of failure to appear.  2nd degree criminal damage to property and aggravated assault.
