Georgia’s Firearms Deer Hunting Season Opens October 18

SHARE NOW

Georgia’s highly anticipated firearms deer hunting season officially opens on Saturday, October 18, marking a cherished tradition for hunters across the state. The season will run into January 2026, offering ample time for sportsmen and women to enjoy one of Georgia’s most popular outdoor activities.

According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD), the state continues to see a strong and healthy deer population. Last year, over 200,000 hunters harvested approximately 220,000 deer—a number that reflects both the popularity of the sport and the effectiveness of regulated hunting in managing the deer population.

The season not only provides outdoor recreation but also contributes to conservation and public service efforts. Deer hunting remains an excellent source of sustainable, healthy protein, and programs like Hunters for the Hungry® are helping turn that harvest into meals for Georgia families in need. WRD and the Georgia Wildlife Federation are expanding this initiative to reduce agricultural damage and support communities. Hunters interested in donating meat or becoming a participating processor can visit GWF.org/ghfth.

Public Land Access & Regulations

For those without private land access, Georgia offers nearly one million acres of public hunting land through Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Each WMA may have specific season dates and rules, so hunters are encouraged to check the latest regulations at GeorgiaWildlife.com/allwmas.

Legal firearms during this season include centerfire rifles and handguns, .22 caliber or larger with expanding bullets, as well as all archery and primitive weapons allowed earlier in the season. Hunters may take up to 10 antlerless deer and two antlered deer, with antler restrictions applied to one of the bucks.

Licensing and Harvest Reporting

All deer hunters must carry a valid hunting license, a big game license, and a current deer harvest record. These can be purchased online at GoOutdoorsGeorgia.com, by phone, or from authorized license agents. Hunters are required to report their harvest through Georgia’s Game Check system within 24 hours using the Outdoors GA app, website, or phone.

Chronic Wasting Disease Monitoring

This season follows the first detection of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in Georgia earlier this year. Hunters in Berrien, Lanier, and Lowndes counties are especially encouraged to submit harvested deer for testing. Drop-off sites include select processors, taxidermists, and freezer locations. While statewide testing is not mandatory, it remains available to all hunters. For details on testing locations, results, and CWD safety information, visit georgiawildlife.com/cwd.

Additional Resources

Hunters can find more information on season dates, regulations, maps (including rut and either-sex days), and nearby processors at GeorgiaWildlife.com/deer-info.

As the season begins, Georgia hunters are reminded to hunt safely, ethically, and in accordance with all regulations. Whether it’s the thrill of the chase or the reward of helping others, the 2024-25 firearms deer season offers something for every participant in this time-honored tradition.
