High school junior girls across northwest Georgia are encouraged to apply for the 2026 American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program, a prestigious leadership experience focused on government and citizenship.
Girls State is a five-day immersive course designed to teach participants the fundamental principles and procedures of city, county, and state government under the American system. Through hands-on instruction in self-government, students gain a deeper understanding of the duties, responsibilities, and privileges of American citizenship.
Eligible applicants must be high school girls completing their junior year who demonstrate good moral character, leadership ability, and rank in the top third of their class. Parents, teachers, and other community leaders may nominate students to attend. Homeschool students are also welcome to apply.
Georgia Girls State has been sponsored since 1940 by The American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Georgia, along with local Auxiliary Units and various civic, fraternal, and patriotic organizations. The American Legion Auxiliary emphasizes that educating young people about the foundational ideals and principles of American government is essential to preserving the republic.
The 2026 Girls State session will be held June 7–12 at Valdosta State University.
American Legion Auxiliary Chickamauga Memorial Unit 217 will sponsor eligible girls residing in northwest Georgia. Sponsorship includes covering the registration fee, providing transportation if needed, and assisting with the online application process through the Department of Georgia.
Interested students may obtain a questionnaire from their school’s Junior Counselor’s office or request one directly from Rhonda Jones at 423-443-5050. Completed questionnaires must be submitted by April 1, 2026. After recommendation, screening, and approval, the final application will be completed online through the ALA Department of Georgia.
For more information, students and parents are encouraged to contact Rhonda Jones before the application deadline.
