The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Walker County, including the city of LaFayette, warning residents of dangerous heat and humidity through 8 p.m. Thursday.
Heat index values are expected to climb as high as 107 degrees, making outdoor activities potentially hazardous. Forecasters say overnight temperatures will offer little relief, with the heat returning quickly on Thursday.
Local officials urge residents to take precautions to stay safe during this period of intense heat:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day,
Stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible,
Limit time spent outdoors, especially during peak afternoon hours,
Check on elderly family members and neighbors, and
Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
This heat advisory covers Walker County as well as nearby counties, including Dade, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Chattooga, Gordon, Floyd, Bartow, and Polk.
Residents should stay tuned to local weather updates and follow guidance from health and safety officials as temperatures remain elevated through Thursday evening.
