Hinkle Fire Station and Rossville Recreation Center Dominate Walker County Commission Meeting

There are drawings for the Fire Station to not only house trucks, but a Community Center as well.  SPLOST money allocated for the project, has akrewed  more than $20,000 since the funding was given around four years ago.  The Board was asked where that money has gone.

“Just tell us,”  Jamie Hulsey said.

County Commission Chairman Shannon Whitfield said the County was given six years for the project.  Architectural plans were available at the meeting. They are not the final drawings .  According to Whitfield, the plans will be on the county’s website by the middle of July.   The fire station would include a community space for meetings and events.  Right now there is one fire truck housed in the building located off Lula Lake Road – next to a Dollar General.  The fire station would be manned by volunteer firefighters.  There are currently none.  There are 20 fire stations in Walker County.   Seven of the stations have full-time, paid employees.  The County is currently looking for volunteer firefighters.  Call Walker County Fire Headquarters 706.539.1255 to learn more.

The Rossville Recreation Center was another hot topic.  The idea of having a countywide recreation and parks department was brought up.

“This would be very expensive,” according to Chairman Whitfield.  “We currently have successful City recreation departments.”

Several residents who attended Thursday nights meeting complained, the building needed a lot of work and  should be utilized  more for youth athletics.  The building is owned by the County .  The County pays for all general maintenance.

There are several celebrations for the 4th of July – including Friday Night’s Freedom Festival in Lafayette and a 4th of July celbration in Chickamauga.

“The ground is very dry,”  Commissioner Brian Stulz said.  ” We should be mindful of that.”
