The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning for Walker County, effective from 7:00 a.m. Saturday through 10:00 a.m. Monday, as a major winter weather event is expected to impact the area.

The greatest level of concern is anticipated between Saturday night and Sunday morning, followed by a hard refreeze Sunday night into Monday.
In preparation for potential power disruptions, Walker County and the City of LaFayette will open warming shelters at 12:00 p.m. Saturday. The shelters will be equipped with cots, bottled water, and snacks. Officials note that residents planning to stay overnight should bring their own bedding, including sheets, blankets, and pillows.
The warming shelters will be located at:
-
Rossville Community Center, 301 Williams Street, Rossville
-
First Church of God of LaFayette, 1002 South Main Street, LaFayette
Additionally, Nickajack Road and Dougherty Gap Road will be closed to through traffic beginning at noon Saturday to ensure public safety as conditions deteriorate.
Authorities are strongly discouraging travel during the storm. Those who must be on the roads are urged to carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, food, and water, in case they become stranded.
Walker County officials also announced that the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will begin operations at 9:00 a.m. Saturday to monitor conditions and coordinate response efforts throughout the storm.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather updates and local government announcements as the storm progresses.
