LaFayette, Ga. — LaFayette High School senior Emily Maanum has been recognized as a 2026 Georgia Scholar by the Georgia Department of Education, an honor awarded to students who demonstrate excellence both in the classroom and in their communities.
This year, 162 graduating seniors across the state were selected for the prestigious recognition, announced by State School Superintendent Richard Woods. The Georgia Scholar program highlights students who have excelled academically while also showing strong leadership, involvement, and service.
“Congratulations to the 162 students recognized as Georgia Scholars this year,” Woods said. “These students exemplify excellence in academics, leadership, and service. I am proud to celebrate their achievements and confident they will continue making a positive difference in their communities and beyond.”
Georgia Scholars are known for taking rigorous courses throughout high school, maintaining outstanding academic performance, and actively participating in extracurricular and service activities.
Maanum stands out as LaFayette High School’s valedictorian and has built an impressive resume during her four years. She has earned distinctions such as AP Scholar with Distinction and the University of Georgia Certificate of Merit.
A dedicated leader on campus, Maanum has served in Student Government for all four years and currently holds the role of Senior Class President. She has also been actively involved in several organizations, including Fellowship of Christian Athletes, BETA Club, FBLA, Juniorette Club, and National Honor Society.
In addition to her academic and leadership achievements, Maanum has competed in varsity cross country and varsity soccer and served as a Junior Board Member. Her individual honors include first place in FBLA Future Business Educator and second place in Impromptu Speaking.
She is also a Georgia Certificate of Merit recipient, a Zell Miller Award qualifier, a Distinguished Honor Graduate, and a Governor’s Honors Program nominee.
Following graduation, Maanum plans to attend the University of Georgia, where she will pursue a degree in Family and Consumer Science Education.
Her recognition as a Georgia Scholar highlights not only her academic excellence but also her commitment to leadership and service in her school and community.
