LaFayette High School athletic teams turned in a strong showing Tuesday night, highlighted by a baseball win over Adairsville, a tennis sweep of Dade, and a first-place finish for the boys track and field team at the John Millican Memorial Meet.
The LaFayette baseball team defeated Adairsville 4-1 behind a solid pitching performance from Austin Dearing, who threw six innings and allowed no earned runs. Brady Wilson, Kort Brown, Landen Kirby, Bryson Cleghorn and Hagen English each recorded a hit, while Andrew Huggins came on in relief to earn the save. The Ramblers return to action Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Adairsville.
On the tennis courts, the Lady Ramblers shut out Dade County 5-0 on Tuesday. Singles winners included Lanie Hamilton, Parker Tudor and Coralee Hise, while the senior doubles team of Leah Willeford and Rihanna Davis earned an 8-3 victory. Hazel Scoggins and Makenna Clarke added another doubles win. In junior varsity play, Caroline Farmer picked up a singles victory, while the doubles teams of Megan Shirley and Brenley Miller and Celeste Cazares and Isabella Starliper also won their matches. LaFayette tennis returns home Thursday for Senior Day against Gordon Lee.
The LaFayette Rambler track and field team also delivered an outstanding performance at the John Millican Memorial Meet, with the boys team capturing first place overall ahead of Ridgeland and Dade County.
Porter Sentell led the Ramblers with first-place finishes in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Aiden Keaton finished second in both events. Jake Nave placed second in the 400, Levi Collins finished third, and Elijah Decker won both the 800 and the mile, with Cayden Decker taking second in the 800.
The hurdles team also dominated, with Kevin Carmichael winning the 110 hurdles, followed by Gabriel Candies and Aiden McGuire, who also won the 300 hurdles. Relay teams posted strong finishes, including first place in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
In field events, Daniel Rivera won the high jump and Zaire Grissom took first in the shot put.
For the Lady Ramblers, Annabelle Penland placed second in the 400 and third in the 200, while Alex Dodson contributed points in the 100 and long jump.
LaFayette athletes will continue competition later this week as spring sports move deeper into the season.
