Multiple tornadoes swept across the Walker County area last night knocking down trees and causing power outages. The first of 3 tornado warnings came early in the evening with the last 2 warnings after 10 PM.
Many were caught off guard as they occurred during a time when a lot of people were asleep. However, the constant rumbles of thunder and intense lightning, along with the tornado sirens, alerted everyone that something ominous was on the way.
The first tornado, confirmed by Alabama law enforcement, tracked across the state line and passed just North of the county seat of LaFayette, GA with high winds, intense and constant lightning, along with large hail. One citizen in LaFayette stated, “It sounded like a loud bowling alley with a light show.”
The second tornado was confirmed by law enforcement. It came across the Alabama/Georgia line after 10 PM, sweeping across the southern point of Dade, northern Chattooga, and Southern Walker Counties.
The third tornado spawned quickly, taking everyone by surprise, while the second tornado was still active. This tornado headed to the Villanow area.
The City of LaFayette reported power outages during and after the storms. Nevertheless, crews worked diligently and restored power quickly.
Officials are still assessing for any damages at this time.
