Near-Record Warmth Expected for Christmas Day

SHARE NOW

Unseasonably warm weather is expected across the region this week, with Christmas Day shaping up to be one of the warmest on record. Forecasters say temperatures could place this Christmas among the top five warmest ever recorded locally, a sharp contrast to the typical late-December chill.

The warm pattern begins Tuesday with partly sunny skies and a high near 67 degrees, followed by a mild overnight low around 52. Conditions remain quiet with light winds. Wednesday will be even warmer, with partly sunny skies and highs climbing into the low 70s, again dipping only into the lower 50s overnight.

By Christmas Day, mostly sunny skies are expected with afternoon temperatures reaching around 74 degrees, approaching record territory for Dec. 25. Mild conditions will continue into Thursday night with lows in the mid-50s.

Meteorologists say the prolonged warmth is the result of a persistent weather pattern allowing warmer air to remain in place across the Southeast during the holiday week.
