Catoosa County recently hosted a regional meeting bringing together local and state partners to share ideas and strategies aimed at treating and preventing opioid drug abuse.
The meeting focused on how best to leverage funding from opioid settlement agreements, along with existing community services, to maximize their impact. Officials said the planning process is now underway for Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, and Walker counties, marking a coordinated regional approach to addressing substance use disorders.
Representatives discussed ways to allocate settlement funds toward prevention, treatment, recovery support, and education initiatives, while avoiding duplication of services already available in the region. The goal, officials said, is to ensure resources are used efficiently to meet the needs of individuals and families affected by opioid addiction.
Opioid settlement funds stem from legal agreements with pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors over their role in the opioid epidemic. More information about the settlement and how funds are intended to be used is available at https://tinyurl.com/yc7pnpd4.
Community leaders emphasized that help is available for those struggling with addiction or other behavioral health challenges. Support and resources for individuals and families can be found through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Rome-Georgia at https://namiromega.org/.
Officials said additional meetings and community input will be part of the ongoing planning process as the four counties work together to address the long-term impacts of opioid misuse across the region.
