Sentencing Set Today in Walker County Road Rage Murder Case

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for this afternoon in the murder case against Jeremy Dewayne McCrary, a Chickamauga man found guilty earlier this month in connection with a deadly road rage incident that unfolded last year outside a Dollar General store.

McCrary, 44, was convicted by a Walker County jury on June 2, 2025, on multiple felony charges including malice murder, felony murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Sentencing is set for 1:00 p.m. today in Walker County Superior Court.

The charges stem from a violent confrontation that occurred on March 22, 2024, when a dispute between two motorcycles and an SUV escalated across several miles of roadway — beginning on Lee Clarkson Road, moving onto Highway 341, and ultimately ending in the parking lot of a Dollar General store.

According to the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, McCrary, one of the motorcyclists involved, shot Danny Claire, the driver of the SUV, in the chest with a 9mm handgun following a physical altercation between the men. Claire later died from his injuries.

At the time, Sheriff Steve Wilson noted that both parties appeared to be aggressors in the incident. While initial reports indicated no charges would be filed, a subsequent investigation led to McCrary’s indictment by a Walker County Grand Jury. He was arrested at his home and has remained in custody at the Walker County Jail since.

Officials say there is no evidence that McCrary and Claire knew each other before the deadly encounter. The motive behind the confrontation remains unclear.

The outcome of today’s sentencing will be added to this story once the hearing concludes.
