Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred Sunday night at a residence on Highway 337 in Chattooga County.according to an update from Sheriff Mark Schrader.
Preliminary findings indicate the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute involving a father and son. Sheriff Schrader said 61-year-old Miles Bagley and his 34-year-old son, Isaiah Bagley, became involved in an altercation after the son returned home from a friend’s house highly intoxicated.
Authorities say both the father and mother made multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation by asking the son to go to his bedroom and remain there. Those efforts were unsuccessful. Investigators report the son continued to confront his father, head-butting him several times and making threats toward both parents.
According to the sheriff, the father retrieved a small handgun from a nearby table and fired a shot into the floor in an attempt to stop the confrontation. The father was then pushed out the front door and onto the porch. While still on the porch, investigators say the son approached him again, at which point the father fired the weapon, striking his son three times.
At some point during the incident, the mother also fell onto the porch, authorities said.
The son was transported to an area hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Sheriff Schrader said no charges have been filed against the father at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials emphasized that the information released reflects preliminary findings and that the case will continue to be reviewed as investigators gather additional details.
