A Georgia State Patrol (GSP) report is shedding new light on what caused a Walker County firetruck to overturn and catch fire last week.

According to the report, the crash occurred as the firetruck was traveling south on Old LaFayette Road, just south of Glass Mill Road. The driver, identified as John Pendergrass, told troopers he attempted to stop at a stop sign but the brakes failed.

The truck reportedly lost control while crossing the railroad tracks. GSP says the vehicle went off the roadway, dropped down an embankment, and overturned onto its side. Shortly after the crash, the firetruck became fully engulfed in flames.

No injuries were reported.

Walker County officials confirmed to WTVC-TV that the incident involved a ladder truck and that the driver was unhurt. The county says a temporary replacement has been secured, and efforts are underway to replace the damaged vehicle.
