USDA to Conduct Aerial Rabies Vaccine Drops Across Northwest Georgia

The U.S. Department of Agriculture will soon begin aerial distribution of oral rabies vaccine baits across Northwest Georgia as part of a nationwide effort to prevent the spread of rabies.

Officials say aircraft will fly over the Tennessee Valley from April 7 through April 15, dropping approximately 500,000 vaccine baits across more than 7,000 square kilometers.

The program targets raccoons, which are a primary carrier of rabies in the eastern United States.

Counties included in the baiting zone include Dade, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, Murray, Gordon, Chattooga, Floyd, Bartow, and several others across North Georgia.

The vaccine, known as RABORAL V-RG, is enclosed in small packets coated with fish-flavored bait to attract wildlife.

Distribution will take place by both fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters, with helicopter operations focused on more populated areas such as Fort Oglethorpe, Ringgold, LaFayette, Dalton, and Rome.

Officials say crews carefully avoid dropping bait on roads, buildings, and bodies of water.

Residents are advised not to disturb the bait. If one is found, it should be left alone or tossed further into wooded areas using gloves or a towel.

The vaccine is considered safe for pets, but officials warn that consuming large amounts could cause mild stomach upset.

The annual program is aimed at protecting both wildlife and public health by reducing the spread of rabies across the region.
