USPS to Honor Late President Jimmy Carter with Commemorative Stamp

The United States Postal Service will honor the late President Jimmy Carter with a commemorative Forever stamp, set to be released on October 1 in Atlanta — the day that would have marked his 101st birthday.

The stamp features a 1982 oil-on-linen portrait of the 39th president, painted by Herbert E. Abrams. The artwork was originally created as a life study while Carter sat for Abrams during preparations for the president’s official White House portrait. The stamp design was unveiled Saturday at the Jimmy Carter National Historical Park in Plains, Georgia.

Carter, who died on December 29, 2024, was the longest-lived U.S. president.

The stamp was designed by USPS art director Ethel Kessler and continues the Postal Service’s tradition of honoring influential figures in American history. According to Connecticut Humanities, Abrams — who spent part of his life in Connecticut — kept the commission confidential while making three separate trips to Georgia to complete the sittings with Carter.

The Jimmy Carter Forever stamp will be available for purchase nationwide beginning in October.
