CHICKAMAUGA, GA — In a bid to find loving homes for its animals, the Walker County Animal Shelter (WCAS) has joined nearly 400 shelters nationwide in the BISSELL Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters®” event, the largest funded adoption initiative in the country. This marks WCAS’s first time participating in the campaign, which runs through May 15.
As part of the event, WCAS is waiving adoption fees for cats and dogs over four months old. Adoption fees for kittens and puppies have also been reduced to just $25, made possible by a sponsorship from the BISSELL Pet Foundation. A list of available animals can be found on the shelter’s page at walkerga.us.
“We are honored to have been selected to participate in this impactful event in partnership with the BISSELL Pet Foundation,” said WCAS Director Melissa Smith. “Our shelter is home to many wonderful animals who have been patiently waiting for their forever families. We are hopeful the Empty the Shelters adoption event will connect these deserving pets with loving, permanent homes.”
As of May 1, nearly 100 animals—including cats, dogs, and even a pig—were available for adoption at the shelter, located at 5488 North Marble Top Road, near Chickamauga. WCAS is open to the public Monday through Friday.
The Empty the Shelters initiative was launched in 2016 and has helped more than 323,000 pets find homes. The program now partners with over 815 animal welfare organizations across 49 states and Canada.
“Every time we host Empty the Shelters, it affirms the importance of this lifesaving program,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. “During the two-week event in May, tens of thousands of pets of all kinds, many who’ve waited far too long, will find the loving homes they deserve.”
