The Walker County Animal Shelter is asking the community for help as it works to meet the daily needs of animals in its care. Shelter staff say several basic supplies are running low, and donations from the public are urgently needed.
At the top of the list are cardboard litter boxes, which the shelter says it uses by the dozens each week. Because of the high turnover, staff say they can never have too many on hand.
In addition, the shelter is requesting donations of paper lunch bags that are used for animal enrichment activities. The bags help staff create games and stimulation exercises that keep animals mentally engaged while they wait for adoption.
With warmer weather approaching, the shelter is also hoping to replenish its supply of plastic kiddie pools for the dog play yards. The pools provide a fun way for dogs to splash and cool off during the summer months. Several were donated last year, but after heavy use many are no longer usable.
Anyone wishing to help can drop off donations at the shelter. Items may be left at the gate if the facility is closed.
Shelter hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Staff members say every donation helps improve the comfort and quality of life for the animals waiting to find their forever homes.
