Walker County Animal Shelter Waives Dog Adoption Fees as Kennels Reach Capacity

Adoption fees have been waived for all dogs over six months old at the Walker County Animal Shelter as the facility works to relieve overcrowding and create space for incoming animals.

The shelter announced the limited-time adoption special, which runs through Feb. 28, 2026, in response to a surge of arrivals that has pushed its kennels to full capacity.

According to a post on the shelter’s Facebook page, 26 dogs arrived in just one week, filling available space despite ongoing adoptions and animals leaving through transport programs.

Shelter officials say each adoption not only provides a home for a dog in need, but also opens space for another animal waiting to enter the facility.

“If you’ve been considering adding a furry companion to your family, now is the perfect time,” the shelter said in its announcement.

The shelter is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and visitors are encouraged to stop by to meet the available dogs.
