In a move aimed at protecting local taxpayers from rising property taxes, the Walker County Board of Education has announced its intention to adopt the full rollback millage rate of 14.418 mills for the upcoming fiscal year.
This decision comes in response to rising property values across the county. Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 48-5-32.1), when property values increase, a taxing authority must adopt the rollback millage rate to avoid what is legally defined as a tax increase — even if the millage rate itself does not change. By choosing to adopt the full rollback rate, the Board of Education ensures that total school-related property tax revenue from existing properties will remain consistent with the previous year.
“This proposed rollback reflects the Board’s continued focus on fiscal responsibility and a strong commitment to minimizing the financial impact on our community,” the District said in a statement.
Over the past five years, the Walker County School District has either maintained or reduced the millage rate. In 2020, the rate stood at 17.404 mills. With the proposed rollback to 14.418 mills in 2025, the district continues its trend of easing the local tax burden while still meeting the growing needs of students.
District officials emphasized that sound financial management remains a priority, along with ensuring that every student graduates prepared for college, work, and life. By leveraging available state funding and making strategic financial decisions, the Board seeks to maintain educational excellence without passing additional costs onto taxpayers.
The proposed rollback rate will be the subject of a public hearing scheduled for Monday, September 15, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will take place at the boardroom of the Walker County Department of Education, located at 301 N Cherokee Street, LaFayette, Georgia. Community members are encouraged to attend and share their input before the Board takes formal action.
