Walker County, GA — May is the height of tornado season, although they can happen any time. With spring storm season already in full swing, Walker County emergency officials are urging residents to take steps now to prepare for severe weather.
“Tornadoes can strike with little warning, and knowing what to do ahead of time can save lives,” according to Ready.gov. Residents are reminded to understand their area’s tornado risk and stay alert during periods of severe weather.
Officials stress the importance of recognizing warning signs, such as a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud, a cloud of debris, or a roar similar to a freight train. Signing up for the county’s emergency alert system, and tuning in to the Emergency Alert System (EAS) or NOAA Weather Radio, can provide timely warnings. For areas with tornado sirens, familiarity with the warning tone is essential.
Meteorologists often forecast conditions that could lead to tornadoes, so residents are encouraged to monitor local weather reports closely.
Preparedness also includes identifying a safe shelter location, such as a FEMA-rated safe room or ICC 500-compliant storm shelter. If those aren’t available, a small, interior, windowless room or a basement on the lowest floor of a sturdy building offers the next best protection.
Pets should be part of any emergency plan, officials say, and families should assemble supplies for a possible long-term stay at home. Recommended items include non-perishable food, water, medical and cleaning supplies, and necessary medications.
Planning ahead can make all the difference. Don’t wait until the sirens sound to start thinking about safety.
