Bobby (Coach) Chappell

Bobby Chappell, age 89, completed his earthly journey on July 31, 2023. He is now reunited with his beloved Millie in their heavenly mansion.

He was the son of the late Rev. Curtis and Irene Adams Chappell.

Along with his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his precious wife of 67 years, Millie, and sister, Sue Smith.

Coach Chappell was a member of the LaFayette First Baptist Church for more than 40 years. He served the Lord and his church as a deacon and he taught Sunday School for more than 50 years.

He served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He spent a year in Korea during the war.

Coach Chappell earned BS, MS, and EdS degrees from Jacksonville State University, and did additional graduate work at UTC. He worked as a teacher, coach, and administrator for 43 years in public education. He retired as Superintendent of Chickamauga City Schools. The countless students whose lives he impacted is his legacy.

Coach Chappell is survived by his daughters, Beth (Milford) Morgan, Karen (Ken) Stoker, Cheryl (Dale) Wilson; his grandchildren Cheribeth Swanson, Ben Stoker, Grady (Deanna) Wilson, Liza Morgan, Mary (Bentley) Hampton; two great-grandsons, Parker Luke Wilson and Pierce Chappell Wilson; great-granddaughter, Millie Elizabeth Hampton; two sisters, Anne Hendon and Bonnie Hamner; nieces, Sandy, Susan, Nan, Mariah, Emilie, Evie, and Annelise; nephews, Philip, Randy, and Rhys, and thousands of students that he considered his own.

Visitation will be held at the LaFayette First Baptist Church on Saturday, August 5, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. with the funeral service immediately following visitation. Rev. Terry Burns, Rev. Roger Stansell, and Billy Brooks will officiate.

Interment will be held in the LaFayette City Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Ben Stoker, Grady Wilson, Bentley Hampton, Mike Poole, Jeff Suttle, Chucky Ware, Greg McCalmon, Tony Burse, and Johnny Shadden.

Honorary pallbearers are the Masters Sunday School Class, Joe Moore, Martha Blevins, Jo Brock, Sharon Bomar, Doug Ingram, Brenda Moore, Ellen Bohanon, Carol Lee Shankel, Dianne Scott, Charles Reeves, Randy Barker, Leon Solomon, Bruce Underwood, James Twiggs, the 1974 Gordon Lee High School Football Team, and the 1978 LaFayette High School Football Team.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in his honor to MS Society of America: 214 Overlook Circle, Suite 153, Brentwood, TN 37027, or to the charity of your choice.
