June 24, 1947 - February 23, 2025
Carol Jo Erwin Whitt, age 77, resident of Lookout Mountain, Georgia passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
Carol Whitt, the daughter of the late Ulyess L. “Shorty” Erwin and Nona Gean Sprayberry Erwin, was born on June 24, 1947, in Rossville, Georgia. Besides her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Doris Case, Jerry Sue Erwin, Brenda Erwin, and Jeanette “Honey” Britt, and her mother-in-law, Lena Whitt.
Carol is survived by her loving husband of almost 59 years Charles Whitt; daughters, Angela Hollingsworth and Tammy (Lonnie-her favorite son-in-law) Wilson; her grandchildren, Daniel Roden, Christopher Roden, Kyle Wayne (Alexis) Wilson, Benjamin (Lacey) Wilson, and Nona Wilson; her precious great- granddaughters, Charity, Rilynn, Hadley and Layla Grace; her brother Rickey (Kay) Erwin; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Carol was a member of the Lookout Mountain United Methodist Church.
Carol graduated from Rossville High School in 1966. She was active in school; she loved PE and she played softball. One of her highest accomplishments was having perfect attendance throughout her entire school career. Carol has always been a spitfire. She was very protective of her family; it started at a young age with her brother. She felt the need to protect him by beating up the boys in the school yard on his behalf. It didn’t stop there. She was just as protective over her husband, children, and even more over her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Carol was a hard worker. She taught her girls the value of working. She started out working at mills operating sewing machines. Then, she landed her job at the Handy Andy Pantries/Favorite Market that would begin her days as an icon in the Fairyland community. She started as a store clerk and worked her way up to the store manager. She was also named as Manager of the Year. She also spent some years working at Cornucopia as well as the Mountain Market. She completed her working years retiring as a teller from Citizens Bank & Trust.
Carol’s pride was her family. Family time was spent in many different ways. In her earlier years, time was spent fishing, camping and being the best taxi driver for her girls! Whether it was movies or the skating rink or just a typical Saturday shopping and eating out, she was full of adventure! She was also a foodie! She loved cooking for her family, and she was a great cook! Later, after retiring she enjoyed her own schedule of sleeping in, staying up late with the one-eyed monster (TV), working crossword puzzles and talking on the phone.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, a caring mother, not just a grandmother but a “Mammaw” and great-grandmother. She will be missed greatly.
Memorial services will be held at the Chapel of W. L.
