Clayton R. Matthews
December 3, 1932 ~ April 17, 2023

Clayton Richey Mathews, 90, of the Fairview Community of Rossville passed away Monday, April 17, 2023.  Mr. Mathews was born on December 3, 1932, in Mentone, AL to the late Jesse and Pearl Mathews.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy and after his discharge from the Navy he met his wife, Wanda who he was married to for 65 years.  Mr. Mathews lived several years in Lakeland, FL and after his retirement from Agrico Chemical he and his wife moved to North Georgia to be near family.  He was a member of the Ft. Oglethorpe Church of Christ where he attended until his health became frail.  Mr. Mathews loved his family dearly and he loved his time with them.  He treasured being able to teach his grandson, Terran, how to ride a bike, fish, feed the ducks and swans, and how to work with tools.  He also enjoyed rides through the Chickamauga Battlefield with his wife.  Mr. Mathews could normally be found repairing or building things around the house or working in the yard.  He loved playing his guitar and singing “Love Me Tender” to his wife Wanda and he loved her homemade apple pies.  He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Billy Mathews; and sister, Opal Jones.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Wanda Erwin Mathews; daughters, Katrina (Tim) Edgecomb and Amanda Mathews Zettler; grandchildren, Terran (Keisha) Edgecomb, Timothy (Leslie) Edgecomb, and Kimberly (Paul) Crocker; three great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Ronnie (Brenda) Erwin and Mike Erwin; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 12:30pm in the South Crest Chapel with Ministers Dolace Bain and Charles Cochran officiating.

Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors provided by the United States Navy and the American Legion Post 95.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2-8p.m. and Monday from 10a.m. until the funeral at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, Rossville, GA.
