Ellagene Baker
July 11, 2023

Ellagene Baker passed away on July 11, 2023 at her home in LaFayette Georgia. She was born in LaFayette on October 5, 1922 to Elbert (EE) Baker and Bonnie Loughridge Baker.

She is survived by her nephews: George (Kenny) Sergent of Annandale, Virginia; Brent Boxall of LaFayette, Georgia; and cousin: Bill Loughridge of Palm City, Florida.

Ellagene was preceded in death by: her father, Elbert (EE) Baker (October 27, 1964); her mother, Bonnie Loughridge Baker (April 21, 1995); her sister, June Baker Boxall (December 10, 1986); and her lifelong friend, Florrie Beth Jackson (December 14, 2001).

As a lifelong resident, Ellagene cared deeply about the people and community of LaFayette. She made a career of service with the U.S. Postal Service from March, 1942 until her retirement on April 1, 1983. The last ten years of her service were spent as postmaster at LaFayette, Georgia.

Recognizing the importance of a good library, Ellagene served on the LaFayette-Walker County Public Library Board of Directors for 24 years. Additionally, she served on the Cherokee Regional Library Board of Trustees, where she faithfully discharged the duties of Treasurer for all 9 years of her service.

Ellagene joined the LaFayette First United Methodist Church in 1934 and was the longest serving member at the time of her death. Ellagene was an active participant in the United Methodist Women Circles and their service activities. She brought her library experience to the church when the church library was established in the church annex building. In addition, Ellagene was active in the Red Cross and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She also enjoyed activities and reunions of her LaFayette High School class.

The compassion, love and dedication of Ellagene's caregivers enabled her to remain in her home in her later years, no doubt extending her life and adding immeasurably to its quality. The family wishes to extend our profound gratitude to Ellagene's caregivers: Lisa Wilder, Leslie Carbine, Judy Burrows, and Lisa Faye Robinson. Ellagene survived three devoted caregivers: sisters Geneva Crane and Rose Dukes, and Rose's daughter, Karen Brown. Tapestry Hospice nurse, Angel Dover, and home health aide, Cassie Baggett, have been of great help in Ellagene's last months. We are forever grateful.

The viewing and funeral will be held at the LaFayette First United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 1 PM until the hour of service at 2 PM. Interment will be held at the LaFayette City Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers are Bruce Potts, Ben Potts, Bill Loughridge, Albert Ellis, Jim Ingram, and Ted Porter. The family will be there to receive relatives and friends.
