Guy Adam Pope, 92, passed into the arms of his loving Savior on Friday, August 2, 2024, at his lifetime home and farm in Villanow, Georgia.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Lizzie Pope, brothers Luther Hill, Burk, James (J.C.), Orville, and infant “Little Brother” Pope, sisters Mary Jordan and Martha Wary, son-in-law Mark Dunn, and numerous special nieces and nephews.
Guy is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Margie Grogan Pope, his daughters Anita Dunn and Juanita (Jeremy) Maanum; grandchildren Nick (Charlsie) Maanum, Katie (Stephen) Dunn Vath, Taylor Dunn, Benjamin Maanum, and Emily Maanum; six great-grandchildren; and many close nieces and a nephew.
After graduating from Subligna High School, Guy continued his education at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where he played baseball and earned a degree in Agriculture. He returned home for a short while, and then served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following college and the military, Guy worked the remainder of his life as a self-employed farmer, growing crops and hay, raising cattle and hogs, and growing the best garden vegetables and fruits. His farming success is evidenced in numerous awards including “Outstanding Young Farmer” in 1959, the “J.C. Pope award for Outstanding Farming Achievement” in 1985, and, most recently, his induction into the Walker County Farm Bureau Hall of Fame in 2023.
Guy was a member of the LaFayette First Baptist Church, where he gladly served on several committees, as a greeter, and a deacon. He also served his community as an elected member of the Walker County Board of Education, on numerous agricultural committees and boards, and as a volunteer at the Armuchee Valley Community Center.
Guy was a passionate sportsman. He was a faithful fan of Kentucky Wildcat basketball and Atlanta Braves baseball, and he pulled many late nights cheering and “coaching” through the last second of the game. Guy enjoyed hunting dove, quail, and turkey, as well as fishing the ponds and creek on his homeplace.
Guy’s love for the Lord was most evidenced in his love for others. He had a way of making every person he came into contact with feel special. He gave of himself generously and without hesitation, and lived a life of integrity, service, hard work, and kindness.
The family will receive visitors at the LaFayette First Baptist Church on Saturday, August 10 from 1:30-3:30, with the funeral following at 4:00. Dr. Don Parker and Dr. Derrick Fielder will officiate. Interment will follow at East Armuchee Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be Taylor Dunn, Carl (Bubba) Griggs, Brian Hart, Benjamin Maanum, Jeremy Maanum, Nick Maanum, and Stephen Vath. Honorary pallbearers are the Master’s and Johnnie Hull Sunday School classes, deacons, and members of LaFayette First Baptist Church.
